- Summary: shellplay is not totally "shell" compatible
Well, after running shellplay and being totally blown away by it (and not
understanding why the author claims to have released in it such a sorry
condition) I tried running it from a graphics-based shell. Oops, big
mistake. Oh well, I just hit 'esc' and everything was fine, but I did
notice that the text screen now had _some_ of the screen updated as it
was in the text-based shell. The simple conclusion I came to was that
(indeed as I was trying to figure out) shellplay writes directly to the
text screen. Too bad, since I wanted to see how much it slows down when
using slow (.console? :) drivers. I guess this says something about system
software...

The University of CA, Irvine probably does not agree with me :)
