Sounds like something I ran into myself (and I though I am the only person
who is experiencing the problem)

According to Xevious at The Atomic Playground, an additional file is needed
to fix the problem. I haven't had the chance to DL that file yet, so I can't
testify to the effect as whether or not it works.

I posted a message similar to yours on metal programming sig, as was the reply
from Xevious. (Q)uickscan the message base when you log onto VSI.

As a temperary fix, press ctrl-s when metal first begin to compile startup.s.
That should get the code to compile. It will not execute properly however.
To get it to run properly, press oa-ctrl-r to reset metal, then (r)estart.
