Yes, it is because the driver wants to know when you've inserted a disk or
manually ejected one. The Apple 3.5 driver does the same thing, only you
don't see it because Apple put a capacitor across the LED to suppress the
flicker. I'm tempted to do that to my floptical ... hmmm.
