Zip & Renaissance Troubles?

After getting my Zip 9/32 installed, I wanted to re-optimize my Hard Drive
using Salvation's Renaissance. It seemed to run fine, until I told it to
examine the disk and all. Then, it put random dots over the screen, and
one time, I had to reboot to get out of this. Disabling the Zip with its
CDA seemed to make Renaissance happy, so I let it have a hack at my boot
drive. About 10% through, it had a fatal error ($1A00, I think), and
forced me to reboot. I lost a lot of stuff, including most of my System
directory, 90% of my Icons, and the source code for some of my files. :(

What I would like to know is: has this happened to anyone else? Is there
something I should have done beforehand, or should I go to another disk
optimization program (are there any others?)?

Thanks for any and all help.
