Back when 1200 baud was FAST, the early IIc's had some sort of timing problem
in the serial ports.  So, Apple offered a little known FREE upgrade to fix the
problem.  Actually, it was a motherboard swap.  Don't know if this is your
problem but just thought you'd like to know.  They should still be doing the
upgrades.
