Posting to Newsgroups

can't subscribe to.

The consensus is for posting to this group, send e-mail to
info-apple@apple.com. This permits the mailing site to identify
each message with a unique number so downline sites can check and
see if they have already received the message. (the short answer)

The long answer is there are two main systems for posting news. The
one built around the "real time" posting via NNTP does the message
numbering and checking. The other system - UUCP tranfers mail in
batches according to "Zen and the Art of the Internet." I'll stick
my head and neck wwaayy out and surmise many of the duplicate,
triplicate and worse postings come thru the UUCP side of the house.
That would not stop someone from mailing multiple copies of an
article to an NNTP site. I don't suppose they could prevent those
duplicates from going out.

There are also multiple gateways for posting to the same gateway. I
sus[ect I have one around here somewhere. I just need to find the
sysop around DLA who is a usenet news junky.
