Sorry?  IEEE 802.3 is Ethernet, which runs at speeds of up to 10 megabits
per second.  This is a physical/data link standard.

Appletalk is a family of network protocols.  Various physical
connections are supported, including LocalTalk (built into the Mac and
IIgs), which has a speed of 230 kilobits per second, EtherTalk (using
Ethernet hardware and protocols), TokenTalk (IBM Token Ring), telephone
connections (e.g. AppleTalk Remote Access), etc.

I think you're comparing LocalTalk to Ethernet.  AppleTalk isn't just
LocalTalk.
