I have to object to the *apparent* feeling that a game gets worse when
more elaborate graphics or sound are added (if I'm wrong on the
interpretation, I apologize). *Of* *course* "effects" aren't everything;
the "plot" and "direction" decide whether a game is good or not. But
given that a game's concept is good, I think "effects" can and do add a
lot. As a rather simple example, the GS version of Silent Service is 
enormously more playable (I think) than the //e version.
