Don't go to all that trouble. Just disable the Zip and try the self-test.
If that doesn't work, THEN pull it out and see if things start working.

This error code pops up all the time because the IIgs self-test does some
software timing that assumes the processor speed is ~2.8 mhz. If you disable
the Zip, that assumption will start being valid and the self-test will work
correctly.
