Vamps? Nah!!!!!

All this VAMPS stuff/hype and several messages on comp.sys.amiga.audio,
got me thinking about surround sound, etc, etc.

One of the more interesting things I can across was changing the phase
of stereo sound samples to create a pseudo 'surround sound' effect.
(sheesh haven't we heard something like that before somewhere ;)

Basically, by changing the phase of one channel by 180 degrees, one can
'broaden' the sound stage.

You can try this yourself if you have an AudioAnimator with Version 1.2
or 1.3 of the AE software, just record a mono-sample, paste it to a
blank stereo-sample, and change the phase of 1 channel. You have to set
the effects channel option to 'Display channel only' for it to really
work.

I sampled a fairly long sample and changed the phase of a large chunk in
the middle of it, and there is a _noticeable_ difference.

(BTW try listening to the sound via the internal speaker: when you
listened to the modified chunk through it, the sound volume dramatically
fades out, since both the channels effectively cancel each other out
because of the opposing phases).

Anyway, a suggestion: would it be easy to implement this sorta thing in
a mod player or the next new way cool music program on the IIgs?

(Basically ensure that the phase of the left channel is opposite to the
right channel)

soniqTracker / ModZap with 'pseudo surround sound' would be neat :)

Awaiting with bated breath
