I assume you mean using only the joystick.

It sounds like some chips may have worked loose. When you turn the GS on,
the pins get warm and expand, when you turn it off they contract. Over
time, socketed chips tend to work themselves loose. 

Try reseating all socketed parts.

Either your keyboard is goin bad (or the ADB connector has gone bad, which
can happen if you connect and re-connect it a lot), or some chip has worked
loose.
