I have a Firewire on mine, but when I tried to install Tiger on it, I had all kinds of problems, my iMac 600 took it fine, but Apple said it will work; and it does, it was not really made to. I upgraded since I was having poblems with some program, it had caused other problems reading files over my local network with my Apple II machines, with 10.3.9 no problems. On Aug 5, 1:17 pm, "Simon D. It also works if you have machine-specific install media and want to install on an unsupported model. Thanks to Simon and Mark for firewire solution. Catch 23 : the clamshell iMacG3s do not have Firewire ports. Only USB 1.1 and Ethernet ports. There's a firmware update needed for some of this, not sure exactly what, but it's all findable and downloadable, if memory serves, from Apple.
I found a slot loading model really cheap in a thrift store, and did the firmware update, and as previously mentioned, the Apple DVD drive I found on eBay for $17 delivered.
The online tutorials made it easy.
