I am the proud owner of drive #582 ( and # 972, as well). Not to gloat, but that's pretty cool. Anyway, #972 works fine, probably because it was Drive 2 for it's entire life. I have the other disk 2 drive disassembled. First question: Which one of those pots on the analog board is used for the speed control?
The pot is located differently on different drives. That information can be found in the FAQs. http://home.swbell.net/rubywand/A2FAQs1START.html
Second: Is there any need for head alignment? I have read that these drives are pretty brainless and that knocking sound on boot is the controller putting the head in the right place (there is no mechanism in these drives to determine absolute head position.
Absolutely, and usually, NOT! In fact, the only one I did mess with took forever to get back, so I'd have to say, no.
Third: What do I clean the head with?
Alcohol, Q-Tip and a good disk cleaner, if you can find one. I've got several, but no, you can't have one, unless you can make me a very rich man. BUWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
Fourth:Does any part of the drive enjoy lubrication (lots of squeaks)
Vaseline, KY, uh, anything petroleum based, I would think. Maybe a light bearing grease, silicone based? I'd wait to see what everyone else has to say on this one.
