Thanks for the idea.  Based on your suggestion I went out and found a
copy of the Chinook SCSI utilities.  I also picked up HDFORMAT and
HACKER.  Unfortunately no luck here either.

WIth Chinook I get a long pause on launch, followed by "ERROR: DRIVE
OFF LINE, Slot 7  [01 &7020]".

With HDFORMAT I get "SCSI error, try again".

WIth HACKER I get "SMP/PRODOS ERROR: 2F".

And of course Apple's High Speed SCSI disk says there are no hard disk
volumes online.

On a side note, I've been able to confirm that all four of these
utilities can see my Rodime SCSI hard drive when it's attached to my
HS SCSI card.  So the card seems to be working fine.  Also, FYI, I
just finished trying a different CF memory card, no change.

It really does seem as though this flash drive is unusable until GS/OS
is loaded, at which time it works perfectly.  This is beyond bizarre.
I am frustrated and yet intrigued!
