At work I have similar DE-9 and DE-15 "adapters" from SunBlade 100/150
computers. It seems that Sun designed the back panel of these
computers without checking for sufficient clearance below the
connector. Many monitor and serial cables cannot plug into the
motherboard socket so Sun shipped a pair of adapters to prevent the
back shell from pressing against the computer case.
