My understanding is that it had numerous bugs and incompatibilities,
some not easily remedied.

A different, more direct implementation (no microcontroller) in an
FPGA could be much better, and is already in at least the advanced
prototype stage.

Old technology that works is great, but old technology that doesn't
quite work is better left behind.
