Does this Zip Chip have the SRAMs showing underneath?

Yes.

Either way, it's just a hybrid- you may be experiencing a poor solder
joint on one of the leads. You could try digging into the material on
the underside- some of them were silicone seal like where you could
peel it back. Reflow the solder on all the leads. They are leads stuck
to the side of a ceramic similar to how the 30 pin SIPs had leads
stuck onto SIMMs.

Mine is potted in what appears to be black epoxy. And, yes, it sure acts like one of the leads is broken off internally. My guess would be RST*. It's probably not coincidence that it starts when rocked down on the opposite side from that pin. Also the computer ignores OA-Ctrl-Reset, treating it like a simple Ctrl-Reset.

Before I take a Dremel bit to the underside, I'd like to have a clearer idea of what's in there. Does anyone have a picture of an unpotted ZipChip?

Steve

Hi Steve, I have the same type of ZIP8000. I too would like to see the guts. Maybe an some x-ray's would be a good idea?

My system functions but I see no increase in speed. All my pins are intact but some look like they could break by looking at them too hard.

Mine came in a used IIc I bought, not sure if there enough space for a ZIF with the IIc memory card on top. It's also got a DS no slot clock stuffed under the hood as well.
