When I bought the program my BBS was still up and I did support existing GBBS SysOps with fixes and updates, as to selling new programs, I did sell a couple, but the problem at the time was the master copy I had gotten from Lance it some major bugs in it, when I finally got some time to work on the program and fix the bugs, the year 2000 came aroud which caused more problems. I fixed the hard code problems with the date, but something in ACOS was coded with a date and I had problems getting that fixed. I did finally get someone to help me find and fix the problem, then my job took me overseas for 29 months, besides during that time no one was interested in buying it and my H/D crashed taking the BBS with it. I did not have time to fix it and just copied all the master GBBS files onto another H/D and disks. I had talked to several people about buying the program rights but no one wanted it so I just put it to the back burner, but still gave support when asked, but there are only 2 boards that I know of now.On Jan 24, 4:00 pm, Steven Lichter <diespamm...@ikillspammers.com> wrote:nem wrote:Steven Hirsch <snhir...@gmail.com> wrote in news:That's exactly correct. Disney Enterprises maintains enough congress-critters (and at least one senator) as wholly-owned subsidiaries to ensure that nothing will ever enter the public domain again under US law.Remember how Sonny Bono lobbied on behalf of Disney because he was afraid of seeing the copyrights on his music expire? Suffice to say that his copyrights aren't doing him much good now <vbg>. The truth is that Disney thinks they can keep the rights to their 1930s cartoons forever so that they can charge you $50 for a DVD set of them. Since the people who made those cartoons are all dead, the money sure isn't going to them. The money in many cases is going to the families or trusts. Yes the studios are getting money. It is not just laws in the US, there are International laws that are enforced by Interpol and other agencies, even China is starting to enforce. Several years ago I went to the Software Publishers Association because a site was allowing D/L of code that I owned. They refused to remove it and it took me a while to even locate the site, when I did I had the site removed and the SWPA took the legal action. You are making the same claims as the Pirates made in the 80's, theft is theft. -- The Only Good Spammer is a Dead one!! Have you hunted one down today? (c) 2009 I Kill Spammers, Inc. A Rot In Hell Co.Steven, correct me if I am wrong.... but as I recall, you purchased the rights to GBBS and then held onto them for a few years.... and refused to sell anyone a license to operate it.... Honestly, if that was the case, I would have a hard time being sympathetic to your cause.... Keep in mind that the word 'pirate' is thrown around a little to easily these days. Technically, I am a 'pirate' for copying DVD's that I legally own. In my opinion, if a licensed publisher refuses to sell or support the product, or is simply no longer in business... regardless of the 'legal ethics' (oxymoron alert) , I tend to side with the 'pirates'.
I seem to remember that you wanted to port the program over to a PC. I had e-mailed you about it, but during that time I still was traveling and lost your e-mail address and you never contacted me, so I figured you just dropped the idea, beside from what I remember there was not much of an interest in and stand alone BBS's. I did get mine to work with my Mac on the NET, but during the 6 months I had it up I only got 2 calls online and none dialup, so it is down for now.
I had talked to Kevin about GBBS several time, he was one of the programmers/owners with Lance and he also holds the rights to EXfer. I sold it to him and I have no idea what he plans, I am again working overseas so I have no time to even worry about it.
As to backups you are allowed to make an archive copy of any programs you have as well as DVDs and CDs. But the way they are protected it is hard to make copies. I make archives of all of my CDs to my H/D using iTunes.
The problems I had with pirating was this guy running a wed site, he had movies, CDs and tons of computer programs, when he finally got busted and taken down; he had allowed D/L of millions of dollars of copyrighted program and music. He got off with a slap on the wrist and a fine, no jail.
