Re: Did Claris buy TimeOut QuickSpell from Beagle Bros?
My understanding was that when Quality Computers was sold, they gave
the rights to all of the TimeOut programs back to the Beagle Bros
programmers. Many of them were eventually released to the public, but
QuickSpell and Thesaurus (by Alan Bird) were not. Word was that the
licensing of the Random House dictionaries prevented this. Of course,
if you own QuickSpell, the AppleWorks dictionaries work just fine with
it.
QuickSpell can be updated to work AppleWorks 5.1 by using my
AppleWorks 5.1 Patcher (I wrote the patch). Why would you want to do
this? So you can locate the main and custom dictionaries in different
directories from each other. With AppleWorks, you can't do this (as I
recall - I haven't looked lately).
For example, you can have Main in /Ram for speed, and Custom on /HD
for saving permanant additions.
And, of course, some people just liked QS better. ;-)
