Alternatives, at least cheaper ones that I've run across lately...

news.individual.net - 10 Euro a year (about $15US)
     text only groups, no binaries

news.motzarella.org - free, don't know much more about them.

www.teranews.com was mentioned, free, 1 connection, 50MB/day
     $3.95 signup fee

I'm sure there will be more...
