I thought that too, but then you'd have to mount the board somewhere
else, so the way it is seems the simplest approach to me.

I've used that approach on a gameport device that stuck out too
far to the right (since they moved the port on the //e).

I used a piece of double-stick foam to secure the small board to
the side of the case, and it worked fine.
