This is what I had to do. Once the keyboard is installed, there is no 
space for the encoder board in between.

That's correct. As you see in the pictures of my adaptation, the encoder 
is merely laying in there behind the lower case/video board. 

I have to come up with something else, as this is not a good long-term 
solution.
