The modem port will do up to 19,200 bps through the firmware, 57,600 bps

Not bad for out-of-the-box 1986 hardware, if I do say so myself. :-)

Just like the 1981 SSC based on the 6551. ;-)

The fact that the IIgs will do 115kbits/sec with Appletalk suggests
that with some driver work it would do 115kbits/sec with RS-422/RS-232
as well.

Appletalk actually runs in synchronous mode at a rate of 230,400 bps.
The ADT guys apparently have both the Super Serial Card and the IIgs
Serial Port running in asynchronous mode at 115,200 bps but I haven't
tried that yet.

It's just a matter of 1) setting the 6551 config register to use
the undivided clock, and 2) using a polling loop to capture the
incoming data to meet the tight timing constraints.
