That Mini-DIN-8 to DE-9F adapter is probably an old MacPlus to Mac128
adapter (the MacPlus was the first Mac to use the Mini-DIN sockets and
many people still had devices that plugged into a Mac 128/512) and
does not have the same pinout as a PC serial port. Do you have a part
number embossed on that cable?
