Okay, thanks.   Ends up it was a parallel cable, took off the null
modem adaptor, and worked!

What i meant by the * was the cursor prompt.  Maybe * wasn't the right
char, since i see the * in the download seems to be different, it just
looked like it while it was in ctrl-a mode.

I have 2 different of those cables (probably have more, I have boxes
of various computer cables), the one works fine, since it was the
extra nullmodem problem.  thanks for the reply.  oh, there isn't any
identifying numbers on it, of course.  =)
