I have used HD disks on both a Superdrive 3.5" drive and regular Apple
3.5" drive and have never needed to tape over the HD hole.

BTW a Superdrive should work fine without a Superdrive controller
card, so I can see no obvious problems with your setup (apart from the
fact that your drive refuses to read that is!).

Maybe someone else can offer a suggestion to repair your drive.
