Well, frustratingly, I opened a letter I got from Intuit today and
discovered that they're shutting off my merchant account service (for
credit card processing) unless I upgrade to QuickBooks 2008. I tried
to do that and it completely hosed QB on my system, and nothing I do
seems to help. In addition to that, Windows appears to have become
corrupted as well in the process.

Have you tried system restore--it should put things back the way
they were before your install.

Don't know what that is. I'm not really a Windows user; I have it on
my Mac for the one and only purpose of running QuickBooks. :)

It's a "time machine" for Windows program files, system files, and
the registry. It generally works very well.

I presume that you are running Windows XP--is that right?

System Restore is the simple way of putting your Windows system back
just the way it was prior to your installation.

Anytime you install applications or system updates, a restore point
is automatically created. You can, using the System Restore utility,
return your system to any restore point you select.

1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to
System Tools, and then click System Restore.

2. On the Welcome screen, click Restore my computer to an earlier time,
and then click Next.

Then select your restore point from the calendar and continue to follow
the steps of the wizard...

Well, I've already pretty much committed to switching to FirstEdge on
the Mac from QuickBooks. Here's where things stand: in a little
while, later today, I'm calling Intuit to request a refund of my
QuickBooks 2008 upgrade. After that, I'm going to buy FirstEdge (I've
got it set up already on my Mac here, with this year's Syndicomm data
already in it) and start the paperwork to get an MYOB merchant account
for credit card processing.

The merchant account will take at least two days and possibly as long
as a week to get. Until then, though, I'll be able to at least
process through the PayPal orders, so I hope to get some of those done
this week.

At this point, the only things that might prevent this switch are if
Intuit refuses for some reason to refund my money or I for some reason
can't get the new merchant account opened.

But a successful reversion to your earlier order database would
decouple your upgrade decision(s) from your ability to process
orders in the meantime the way you always have.
