You may know that Pacific Data Images (PDI) got its start in the
1980s doing similar animations for TV commercials--like logos with
"glints"--using an Apple II. ;-)
Computer animation in those days usually meant generating monochrome
graphic "color separations" and photographing them through RGB filters.
The computer both generated the frames and controlled the movie camera
photographing them.
Apple graphics were a little low in resolution for more than TV or
novelty purposes, but the Tektronix 1024x1024 storage CRT terminals
were widely used, as were DEC's 1024x1024 vector CRT displays.
There are several quite beautiful animations from this period, like
one I remember with "mandala" in its title that ran for many minutes.
