I have exactly the same behaviour, altough I did'nt use the same way. 
I'm using DSK2F58 to recreate disk on my IIgs, and it's not working. 
With none of the disk image I found on Internet, except ONE, wich work.

I buy a set of original Apple /// disk on ebay, made Disk image of them, 
and was able to write them back to disk, using DSK2F58.

So, most if not all Apple /// disk image that can be found around seems 
to be corrupted.
