Well, turns out that I just needed to reformat the first partition.
Using Chinook's SCSI Utility (Version 1.5), I did a fresh repartition
and reformat, copied the files from the System Utilities disk, and
successfully booted off from the Chinook.  I've never seen the System
Utilities come up that fast from a cold boot!
