Re: Another ZipGSX Mod Success!

I occurs to me that sliding a piece of thin sheet-metal between the socket and

stock that will do the trick can be bought at hobby shops and hardware stores.
With that in place underneath, one could hand-hold a fine hacksaw blade and
have a reasonably safe shot at it.

This occurred to me as well, however, I could not find anything thin
enough. The gap between the IC socket and the board is very small. You
would need a *very* thin metal strip.

Hmm. Maybe I was overly optimistic.

While we're on the subject of GSX upgrades, is there anyone with a sped-up
ZipGSX that also logs to an Appletalk server? Even with the Appletalk delay
engaged, I'm finding that my desktop or application drops partially dead after
being left idle for a while. Mouse motion still works, but nothing responds
to button down. If I run GNO and leave it sitting at the prompt, I eventually
get a boxed message that the server has disappeared and things go dead.

I don't use Appletalk yet, but I hope to one day get Appletalk talking
to a Linux box via a Appletalk to ethernet bridge. It another project
I have filed away. ;-)

Do you only get the problems you mentioned when connected to an
Appletalk server?

I'm trying to zero in on the problem. If I slow the ZipGS down to 50% (of 12.5 MHz.) it stays connected all day. The Zip manual does mention the requirement for setting 87% speed on an 8MHz ZipGS when using Appletalk so that's roughly equivalent. I think there are some critical timing loops buried in the client code.

Speaking of GNO, I tried to get GNO working for the first time the
other weekend, and the latest version fails to work on my ROM3 IIgs
running on a CFFA. It gets to the login screen, I enter my username
and password, it displays the MOTD and then hangs indefinately.
Weirdly, if I switch back to an older kernel version, I can log in and
do stuff. I'll probably have more of a play around with it and if I'm
still stuck, I'll start a new thread in the nearly deceased c.s.a2.gno
group.

I'm not sure what the "latest version" is, but I'm using it on a ROM3 IIgs without any problems. Next time I have it up I'll get the system version and post it.
