Correct, there are two latches on either rear corner of the IIgs case that are pushed in to open up the case.
The easiest differences to spot between a ROM1 and ROM3 IMHO are:* the battery is adjacent to slot 1 in a black plastic bracket on a ROM3 whereas the ROM1 has the battery soldered onto the LHS of the board
* the ROM3 does not have keyboard or numeric keypad solder points or sockets whereas the ROM1 does
* the ROM3 has "Apple IIgs" written parallel to the memory expansion slot on the RHS of the board whereas the ROM1 has it written perpendicular to the memory expansion slot and more towards the center of the board.
