The cases are designed to pop right open from the rear, though over
the years of disuse they can get very sticky. Schools could have
screwed in a small metal screw to prevent kids from opening the case,
but I have yet to see this in practice.
The power supply also pops right out, or at least piviots (from the
rear) to allow for an easy viewing of the battery. There's a plastic
latch at the front of the power supply that you can release with your
finger, and then pivot the power supply up like a hood on a car. Then
you get a great view of the battery.
