In the iPhones case you do pay the full price but I don't think you have to agree to a contract, but you are stuck using the phone on the at&t system in the US. It may not be fair, but if you don't agree, don't buy the phone.
The battery situation may be changing in the future, I believe there is going to be an easy way to change out the battery in later models of the iPhone.
I for one don't care at all for the phone for many reasons I use a Palm Treo that works fine and will also link just fine to my Mac, which is linked to my Apple II.
