David,
I can assure you that AW3 was heavily influenced by Beagle Bros. Randy
Brandt and Mark Munz, among many other contemporary Beagle
programmers, were contracted by Claris/Apple to do the rewrite and
such. It's codename was "Spike." I know for a fact, for example, that
a lot of the rewrites had to do with third-party hardware and software
(such as Beagle's own Timeout series). Patching AW2 for Timeout was
really tricky, for example, while there was virtually no patching to
make a timeout module work with AW3.
I know this because at the time I was working for Beagle Bros doing
end-user tech support, from 1988 to 1991. 'Twas my first job in the
industry.
That said, I couldn't recall if RamWorks-style memory was supported at
that point or later, or what would happen with multiple cards.
Now that I'm chatting about it, I think I may recall that Mark Munz's
AppleWorks 3.0 Companion may allow for enabling or disabling drivers.
I'll have to dig that disk out.
