Bill,
Thanks for the sage words.
I've been using the Sequential Systems "RAM GS Memory Test Version
1.8" and I can report the following:
1. The "Standard Test" almost always passes.
2. The "Refresh Test" occasionally fails. Somes it fails 10 out of 10
times. Other times is passes 10 out of 10.
3. Swapping SIMMs around will make the position of the failed ram from
the Refresh Test change on the screen.
Having tried 4 different combinations of SIMM positions on the card, I
am pretty sure I have isolated which SIMM is causing the problem.
Unfortunately, there are no markings on the RAM4GS that indicates what
SIMM is what memory bank number, and the testing program doesn't label
RAM banks either, so I just have to keep careful notes about what
SIMMs are where and where the "fault" icon is on the screen.
One problem I've discovered is that the RAM4GS apparently MUST have
all 4 memory slots filled. Since there are no jumper pins or DIP
switches to indicate the amount of ram on the card, I guess the card
tells the computer that there are all 4 megs present, even when there
aren't. Ideally, I would have removed all SIMMs but one and then
tested the card, but the card always reports 4 MB present, and the
card ALWAYS fails the refresh test when any SIMMs are missing. In
other words, I can't test that way.
Anyway, I'm now working under the assumption that I should get more
SIMMs. Can someone report what the specs are for these things? RAM
Speed (mine are 70ns, but would 80's work? 60's?)? Fast Page Mode? 3-
chip or 9-chip? Parity or non Parity?
Any other memory tester out there that works better for this card?
Thanks,
Warr
