Re: Super Hires Image Library

I am still mighty impressed by the Taj Mahah (starting of this thread)
image, and the few images of Deluxe Paint (same as Amiga version),
knowing the 16 colors limitation of SHR.
This picture was *designed* to look good under the limitations of
SHR graphics--after all, it was used to advertise the results that
could be obtained with the paint program!
For example, error diffusion produces textures on gradients that are
consistent with pixel-sized "masonry", so when the dome, for example,
is rendered in this way, your mind can "see" the texture as a property
of the subject rather than an artifact of the image.

Of course, these pictures were all wonderful compared to what we
had seen in DHR, but graphics capabilities have so far outrun them
now that a modern viewer would be unimpressed.
For the modern viewer, retro computing should avoid trying (and failing)
to be photorealistic, and instead use "cooler" graphics that are only
suggestive rather than attempting to be truly representative.
