Ok, no problem - I'll re-image the disk and try again, after wiring up
another adapter. I'm paranoid that I cooked a transistor or the
diode. I'm going to leave somewhat longer tails on the components
this time... and will install in a II+, which will have a little more
room for my fingers. :-) I sourced enough parts for five adapters, so
I have a few more spares yet.

Yep, I remember that from other discussions of the IIgs port. And,
you have a picture of the correct orientation in an IIgs, so I just
rotated it for the IIe.

Alas, no - which would account for my desparate plea on usenet. I
didn't even find it in gmail's spam filter, which I use to filter my
