Unless your son is more artist than programmer, HGR will more than
satisfy his need for graphics--including the nature of the speed vs.
detail compromises that are *always* involved in graphics coding.

Experience with any good HGR game will demonstrate this.

For TML Pascal II, all you need to do is a Graphics(320) or
Graphics(640), and you can immediately use all the QuickDraw command
like LineTo, MoveTo, and I can draw very beautifu diagrams for my son
with just a few lines of code. I can't find any other environment -
unless it is too domain specified like LOGO or HyperCard, to do the
same thing.

I found (and still find) Applesoft to be a great prototyping
environment--especially when combined with Program Writer as
a full-screen editor/renumberer, etc.

It's easy to sit down and dash off a program to try out an
idea, which is, for me, quite important.
