I'm afraid I can't help you with the emulators -- I still run on true
Apple II hardware, but one thing you might have missed if you've been
out of the loop for ten years is GSoft BASIC.  It was written by Mike
Westerfield of ByteWorks fame and is currently for sale at Syndicomm.
GSoft BASIC is an Apple IIGS basic that supports the advanced features
of the GS and allows for toolbox programming.

Toolbox programming might be a little much for an 8-year-old, but it
accpts Applesoft-style BASIC programs just fine, and he can grow into
the advanced features as he learns.

I don't know if it's right for you, but I do know that if *I* were eight,
that's the language I would want to program in.  ;-)
