So, again, Michael is going to laugh, but I solved the problem by
opening up the monitor and playing with the 2 centering rings around
the yolk to find a good average image center between my early and
later rev Apple IIs. It's so nice to know that what works for the
Macintosh will also work for the II... ;-)
