comp.sys.apple2 is a newsgroup name, not a hostname. You need to configure
your reader with the hostname of your ISP's NNTP server (or if you're using
one of the dedicated news providers (such as Giganews or NewsHosting), you
need to plug in the hostname of one of their servers).
Once that's done, most readers will pull down a list of available
newsgroups. You can then select comp.sys.apple2 (and whatever else you
want) from that list to subscribe.
