If you're going to be downloading a large amount of 8-bit data, might I
suggest trying out Davex, written by Dave Lyons of GS System 6 fame?
Davex is an 8-bit shell that sits on top of ProDOS, providing a command
line interface far more useful than BASIC.System. It provides many of
the common file and text utilities found in a Unix environment, and it
can be expanded by the addition of external commands.
When I upgraded from a II+ to a GS almost twenty years ago, I ran Davex
almost exclusively, even to the point of setting up an external command
to run a bouncy ball demo as a manually activated screen-saver. I was
able to afford only the GS CPU and had neither the memory nor the storage
space to run GS/OS until a year or two later.
Try it. I think you'll like it.
