As we all know societies have recently become very concerned about energy, warming, carbon, etc. Wouldn't an Apple 2e with a 14" monochrome monitor consume far less power than a typical desktop PC with 19" CRT, or even PC + LCD? (maybe even a laptop - don't know) If so, then that is another reason for going 8 bit.
I suspect that the laptop wins in most cases, particularly against *any* CRT monitor. If an Apple II were implemented in modern ASIC technology (or even custom ;-), like the C= DTV, then the entire computer could dissipate less than a watt, no problem. The display would dominate the power equation. But even in its //e form, the power dissipation is only a few watts (unless you add a TransWarp ;-). -michael NadaNet file server for Apple II computers!
