Re: IIgs netboot idea.

About a year ago, I was trying something related to this. I was trying to boot my IIgs off a Mac LC475 through the Ethernet port of an add-in card to the LC. I remember that I could not get it to work through the AsanteTalk bridge. I think it was also mentioned in the a2central LAMP archives.

I was able to make it work using a Farallon Etherwave bridge (one was recently unsold on eBay for $25) and there are several more listed -- look for the one that has the LocalTalk, not the AAUI, connector. One is up for auction now (eBay 130099279176). The LC475 sees AppleTalk over Ethernet, while the IIgs sees AppleTalk over LocalTalk.

I have since taken down my setup, but I've been planning to make some tests again since I recently obtained a Farallon Etherwave bridge that takes its power from the ADB port (instead of an additional wall wart).

I also have a GatorBox, but did not use it to test this scenario. A GatorBox will be useful once you start getting interested in Marinetti, because the GatorBox is a MacIP server as well. I've connected it directly to my Ethernet home router and to my LocalTalk network where the IIgs is attached. Marinetti is able to obtain an IP address using DHCP. A Shiva FastPath (one of which I recently sold to a reader of the newsgroups) also works the same way. Although if you are connecting to a Linux box, I think there is an existing MacIP server package that you can install on Linux.

Thanks for the info (and eBay link). I guess its not going to be as easy as I hoped. I have to get my Rube Goldberg setup (that would be IIgs -> Mac SE/30 w/ A/UX -> G4 Cube OS X sharing wireless connection) out of my bedroom before my fiancee has a fit.
