Greetings everyone,
After a long period of frustration and disgruntlement (over not having
the money to pay GSE-Reactive or someone else to fix or replace it
despite their kind offer to do so), I have finally managed to repair
the Transwarp GS that has been sitting around dead in my apartment for
the last few years. It turned out that all that was wrong was that its
oscillator was no longer oscillating (maybe someone had plugged it in
in the wrong orientation at some point in time; who knows).
Anyway, I replaced the oscillator and the card works great. Now that
it is up and running, I am noticing that my IIGS gets quite hot while
in operation. I'm running a 40 meg Vulcan hard drive (with the cooling
fan that blows air upward in their power supply/hard drive mount combo
unit), and have the Transwarp in slot 3, the Vulcan IDE controller in
slot 6, and an Apple 1MB memory card in the memory slot.
I was thinking that maybe the Vulcan fan (which does exhaust a small
amount of air from the case via the top vents) would keep things cool,
but it does not seem to be doing the job. I have never seen a System
Saver GS for sale on eBay, nor do I know how exactly it worked in the
first place, so I am wondering how you all go about keeping your
IIGSes cool.
I suppose I could cut holes in the case and mount my own fans, but
since this is my "original" IIGS, which was the first computer I/my
family ever owned, I would prefer not to massacre it in that way. (I
suppose I could buy another one from eBay and use that, though.) I
have also heard rumors that the high speed CPU and GALs from GSE-
Reactive run cooler than the stock parts. My other idea is that I
could perhaps build some kind of a "fan tray" and affix it to the top
of the IIGS' case. This could have two fans blowing air into one side
of the case's top and two fans sucking air out of the other side. This
seems like a bit of a dubious idea though.
So, I am wondering what you guys do and/or recommend for IIGS cooling.
I am planning to install (at least) a larger RAM card in the near
future, so it seems that my heat situation will probably only get
worse unless I do something about it.
