Perhaps, but even a 386 is two generations beyond a 65816. I actually developed X11 device drivers on a 386/20 on a 4MB machine. It took half a day just to compile a change to the ddx layer and link it all. Never mind a full build. I was quickly upgraded to 16MB :-) Even that took quite some time to compile and link. Just because you can, doesn't always mean you should. However, I think a much more attainable project would be to write a VNC client. Along with the Uthernet card, you could have a nice retro X client. VNC uses a small enough subset of the X protocol to easily implement on a IIgs.
