Get used to it. The great unwashed masses that showed up sometime
after 1985 or so are clueless about bandwidth considerations...
And in a world dominated by graphic web pages, text is never
a bandwidth consideration... ;-)
Sure it is. We're talking usenet, which by tradition is all text. It's
a hidden cost that everyone pays for...
Sorry, Mike, but that's "old think".
Text is a negligible part of Internet bandwidth, just as voice
is a neglegible part of bandwidth to the home.
Never waste time worrying about effects under 1% unless all larger
effects have already been optimized.

It makes sense to me to cut out stuff you're not replying to...
look at what's above.. ?4? different posts. Plus this one.
5 posts. A bit redundant. Not too bad if it's an uninteresting
thread, but if a bunch of people start talking about something,
we'll have

Usenet is a list. Like a "bulletin board". You put things on the
board, and people reply to them.
If this was a real bulletin board, you wouldn't copy 10 lines (by
hand, pen on paper) to reply to some 10 lines that someone else wrote.
Or post-its, on your fridge:
"note: get milk!"
later, you remember something else, so you make another post-it, and
stick it on the fridge, below the first:
"note: get milk!
oh yeah and whiskey"
but then another member of your household comes along, needs something
at the store, and makes another post it, and sticks it on the fridge
below the second:
"note:get milk!
oh yeah and whiskey
dont forget cheese"
If I walked into that house, and saw those 3 post-it's on the fridge,
I think I'd find new friends :-)
