Most people believe that clones are exclusively a PC thing, but even in this Apple was the first... as well.
I always had the opinion that IBM designed/released their PC systems with that in mind. Since the system would be cloned, at least they (I'm assuming the R&D) would have some control over the functional design.
Perhaps it was simply for posterity and they wanted to be remembered in the history books.
FWIW, much of that design still exists today.OTOH, it has been said that the original design of the PC is what hinders it's growth now.
Back on topic though, I never realized how much the II was cloned. What about IIe clones? It seems many were II and II+.
