That is indeed true. However I was extremely bothered by the regulator being
ziptied to a wire to prevent it from either shorting out or hitting the
fan.

I understand your concern.

I always worry about components secured only by "longish" leads,
since my industry experience taught me that these are the first
to break off in vibration testing.

Flipping that tiny switch to see the computer leap to life is also strangely
rewarding.

Yes--I remember my first similar "rush" in the 1960s, when pressing a
small pushbutton caused a room-sized computer to "whoosh" to life.  ;-)
Not many got to have that experience since the computers were generally
left on, and the power panel was not readily accessible.
